Reverse Heart Disease
Everything you need to know about atherosclerosis and more importantly how to reverse atherosclerosis safely without surgery or drugs

Confessions of a former heart surgeon
Atherosclerosis (ath"er-o-skleh-RO'sis) comes from the Greek words athero (meaning gruel or paste) and sclerosis (hardness). It's the name of the process in which deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and other substances build up in the inner lining of an artery.

Atherosclerosis is a complex disease that researchers now believe may start in childhood. Then, as a person ages, atherosclerosis is likely to worsen as more plaque is deposited in the arteries. In some people, atherosclerosis can progress quickly resulting in morbid cardiovascular events at around 30 years of age.

While the exact cause of atherosclerosis remains unknown, many researchers believe that the build-up of plaque begins when the innermost layer (endothelium or intima) of the artery becomes damaged by free radical attack (oxidation) and associated inflammation. Either as the body's attempt to repair this damage, or simply because they become trapped, fatty substances (such as LDL and vLDL cholesterol), fibrin and minerals (such as calcium and other metals) collect at the site of the damage forming a plaque that narrows the affected artery opening.

Arteries carry blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to the tissues of the body, providing the fuel needed by the cells to function properly and repair effectively. If the arteries narrow, such as is the case with atherosclerosis, less nutrients and oxygen will be delivered to the tissues associated with those narrowed arteries. Lowered nutrient and oxygen supply leads to progressive cell death and loss of tissue function.

What Is Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis can affect your health in various ways but the 4 most common and potentially deadly possibilities are:

  • Occluded (blocked) coronary arteries, Coronary Artery Disease (C.A.D) causing heart attack and or dangerous heart irregularities called arrhythmias.
  • Occluded neck and brain arteries causing stroke and dementia.
  • Occluded arteries to the kidneys causing kidney failure or chronic kidney disease.
  • Occluded arm, leg and torso arteries, Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.), increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke (from blood clots that "break off and travel"). PAD can also cause gangrene.

What Health Risks Are Associated With Atherosclerosis

What Are The "Warning Signs" Or Symptoms Of Atherosclerosis?

The specific symptoms of atherosclerosis depend on what arteries are affected.

When arteries to the brain are affected, atherosclerosis warning signs include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizzy spells
  • Ringing of ear
  • Memory problems
  • Poor concentration
  • Mood changes

When arteries to the heart are affected, atherosclerosis warning signs include:

  • Chest pain (angina), even twinges could be warning signs so pay attention to your body talking or you could become plant fertalizer sooner than you expected.
  • Elevated blood pressure

When arteries to the arms or legs are affected, atherosclerosis warning signs include:

  • Aching muscles
  • Fatigue
  • Cramping pains in the calves (intermittent claudication) especially while walking
  • Pain in the hips and thighs (may be present depending on which arteries are blocked)

Statistically your first major warning sign of atherosclerosis may be a heart attack or stroke. In my opinion the reason for this is that people simply don't pay attention to the various warning signs and unfortunately your first heart attack or stroke could be your last. If you survive your chances of becoming disabled or dying within a year are dramatically increased. Because of this fact...

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and may save your life.
